The U.S. women’s football team defeated Brazil 1-0 to claim the gold in the football event of the Paris Olympic Games on Saturday.
Mallory Swanson‘s 57th minute strike earned the Americans a first Olympic women’s football gold medal since London 2012.
Swanson received a through pass from Korbin Albert and slotted past the Brazilian keeper.
It is now a record-extending fifth Olympic football gold medal for the Americans.
For the Americans it is back to winning ways following their disappointing outing at the 2023 FIFA women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
It is a third consecutive loss to the U.S. for Brazil in the Olympic football gold medal match, after losing at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.
Also Saturday’s game was almost certainly the last major match for Marta of Brazil.
