FCT, – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has shut down activities at the secretariat of the Labour Party (LP), demanding the sack of the National Chairman of the party, Julius Abure.

The NLC members are protesting against the Labour Party's national convention planned for the end of this month.

Abure was accused of planning to hold a “secret” convention without the input of major stakeholders, The Nation reported.

The workers accused Abure of planning to destroy the Labour Party.

It was gathered that the prevented protesting workers from gaining entrance into the party Secretariat.

NLC had earlier issued a statement urging its members to picket all LP State Secretariats over the alleged illegalities and by Abure

In a short video posted via its X handle (formerly known as Twitter) @NLCHeadquarters, the union called the protest the rescue of theLabour Party

“That given the intransigence of the National Chairman of the Labour Party to unilaterally hold a National Convention of the Labour Party, financial rascality and contempt for the leadership of the NLC, the NLC State Councils and State Political Committees should mobilise workers to picket all the State Secretariats of the Labour Party, scheduled for Wednesday, 20th March 2024.”

Henzodaily.ng earlier reported that the leadership of the Labour Party (LP) asked the , Joe Ajaero, to resign and contest the chairmanship position of the party.

The opposition party made this assertion while responding to a letter written by the NLC political commission, the union's political wing, calling for the suspension of the LP's planned convention in Umuahia, Abia state.

The NLC political commission asked the national chairman of the party, Julius Abure, to resign immediately with a caretaker transition committee set up to organise a legitimate and all-inclusive national convention.
