The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, has asked President to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, , in the best interest of the South-East.

The appeal is coming on the heels of the denial of Kanu's application by a in Abuja.

The appeal was made by the President of the CBCN, Most Reverend Lucius Ugorji, during the episcopal ordination of the Auxiliary Bishop of Orlu Diocese in Imo State on Wednesday.

Ugorji said Kanu's release will pave the way for economic prosperity and security in the South East.

According to him, the IPOB leader's continued detention has been the major cause of in the South East, adding that the Monday sit-at-home has paralysed the economy of the zone by making many businesses lose billions of on a weekly basis.
